1. Introduction

Spoka English (“we,” “our,” or “us”), developed by Spoka Labs, is a mobile app designed to help users improve their English fluency through listening, speaking, and recording practice.

We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, your rights, and how we comply with applicable privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Audio Recordings & Microphone Access

  • We request microphone access to enable speaking practice in the “Speak & Match” and “Recording” features.
  • Audio recordings are stored only in the app’s temporary cache memory during practice sessions.
  • Recordings are not uploaded to our servers or shared externally.
  • There is no option within the app to share these recordings.
  • All recordings are automatically deleted when you switch to another feature, close the app, or when the app is restarted.
  • Because recordings are stored only in cache memory, they are also removed if the app’s cache is cleared or if the app is uninstalled.
  • Speech-to-Text (STT) processing is handled by your device’s built-in Android STT service, which may process speech locally or via Google’s servers depending on your device settings. This processing is controlled by Google and your device settings; our app has no access to or control over this data. We do not collect or transmit your audio to our own servers.

🔒 Why we do this: To protect your privacy and keep the app lightweight, we store recordings only in temporary memory. This ensures your practice sessions remain private, are never stored permanently, and are automatically deleted when no longer needed.

2.2 Text-to-Speech (TTS)

  • We use Google Text-to-Speech (TTS) services, in both online and offline modes, to provide pronunciation support during lessons.
  • TTS requires the Google Text-to-Speech app to be installed and set as the default TTS engine on your device.
  • All TTS processing is handled by Google’s service directly on your device. We do not collect, transmit, or store any text, audio, or output generated by TTS.

2.3 Internet Connection

Certain features such as Listen & Practice, Speak & Match, and Recording require an active internet connection to function properly with TTS and STT services. An internet connection is also required to load and display advertisements within the app.

2.4 Analytics and Crash Reporting

  • We use Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to monitor app performance and improve user experience.
  • These tools collect anonymous data including device type, OS version, app interactions, and crash logs.
  • We do not collect or store any personally identifiable information or audio/text lesson content through analytics.

2.5 Advertising and Monetization

  • We display ads using Google AdMob and Facebook (Meta) Audience Network.
  • These third-party ad networks may collect limited data (e.g., device identifiers, cookies) to serve personalized ads, subject to your consent.
  • In applicable regions (e.g., the EU), we request your consent via Google’s UMP consent form on first launch.
  • Ads require an active internet connection to be displayed.
  • You can manage or opt-out of personalized ads anytime via App Menu> Settings > Ad Personalization Setting in the app or by visiting: Google Ads Settings.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Enable speech recognition and scoring during practice sessions.
  • Provide accurate text-to-speech playback.
  • Analyze app usage and fix technical issues.
  • Deliver personalized or non-personalized advertisements (with your consent).

5. Permissions

  • Microphone Access: Required to record your speech for practice features such as “Speak & Match” and “Recording.” Audio is stored only in temporary cache memory and is automatically deleted when you leave the feature, close or restart the app, clear cache, or uninstall the app. Speech-to-Text (STT) processing is handled by your device’s built-in Android STT service, which may process speech locally or via Google’s servers depending on your device settings. We do not collect or store your audio on our servers.
  • Notifications: Used to send reminders, app updates, and announcements. You will be asked for permission and can opt out at any time in your device settings.
  • Text-to-Speech (TTS): Requires Google Text-to-Speech to be installed and set as the default engine on your device. We do not collect or store any TTS output.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Audio recordings are stored only in temporary cache memory and are automatically deleted when you leave the feature, close the app, restart the app, clear cache, or uninstall the app.
  • We do not permanently store or transfer your audio recordings to our servers.
  • Analytics and crash data are retained according to the policies of Firebase and other providers. You may request deletion of your analytics data by contacting us.

7. Children’s Privacy

  • The app is not intended for children under 13.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
  • If you are under 13, you may use the app only with parental consent and supervision.
  • We do not knowingly collect or process personal data from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected such data, we will delete it immediately.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights under applicable laws such as GDPR and CCPA:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction or deletion of your data.
  • Withdraw consent for personalized ads.
  • Opt-out of the sale of personal information (applicable to California residents).

9. Security

We implement industry-standard measures to protect your data. Since audio recordings are stored locally, their security depends on your device’s protection (e.g., passcode, encryption).

We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally to reflect changes in practices or legal requirements. Updates will be posted in the app and on the app store listing. Major changes will be communicated via in-app notifications.
